Mother’s Day is a modern celebration that honors mothers and motherhoods and is celebrated and observed by a lot of countries in the world.
The story behind mother’s day
Festivals honoring mothers in ancient times were often tied to gods and goddesses. But the first Mother Day celebration recorded and celebrated was in the early 20th century, in 1908, when Anna Jarvis held a memorial service for her mother.
Earlier she had started a campaign in 1905, the year when her mother died, to make a recognized holiday for Mothers around the world. Her mother was a peace activist who took care of wounded soldiers in the American Civil War and created Mother’s Day Work Clubs to address public health issues.
Anna Jarvis wanted to honor her mother by following her steps and continuing the work she started and also setting aside a day to honor all mothers because she believed a mother is “the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world”. Her request was rejected at first, however by 1911 all U.S. states observed the holiday, with some of them officially recognizing Mother’s Day as a local holiday and the rest is history.
Mother’s Day Today
Now Mother’s Day is an annual event but is held at different dates in the calendar, depending on the country. In most countries it’s celebrated on the second Sunday of May, leaving it this year to be celebrated on the 10th of May.
So now it’s your time to show appreciation to your mother by giving her a present and making her feel special. And we are going to give you some ideas on how.
First and foremost, for those of you who are not able to physically be with your mothers because of the pandemic, it’s still a good thing to express and show that you care.
Set up an extra-long Zoom/Skype call
It will warm your mother’s heart in times like these to know that you are thinking of her and spend a couple of hours talking to her on the phone. Tell her how much she means to you and that you are the person that you are today because of her. It’s the small things that count!
And if you want to go a little extra:
Send a flower delivery to her house
Flowers never go out of style and even if you are not physically separated from your mom it is a good idea to give her flowers as a present for Mother’s Day. Ask someone, your dad, brother or sister, a neighbor to go get her favorite flowers and have them delivered on Sunday.
Alternatively, you can order flowers online from several flower shops and have them deliver them to her – contact-free and without any hassle.
She won’t expect it and she will surely be happy about it. Top it off with a vase for the flowers. The flowers will last for a couple of days, but the vase will stay as a decoration for a lot longer.
Other Mother’s Day gifts:
Plantable greeting card
It’s something that has become really popular nowadays. They are also called seed cards and they are just what the name says: a seed and a card, meaning you get to write a special quote or a wish on a seed-infused paper. Afterward, because of the capability of the paper to biodegrade, she can use it to plant.
It’s the perfect, thoughtful gift for mothers that enjoy growing new things and like to spend time in the garden. And on the other hand, you will reduce paper waste and get to be more eco-friendly.
A scrapbook of recipes
Scrapbooks are a great way to show someone that you are caring and made an effort of putting all that up together. A recipe book functions as a personal treasure. You will need to gather all your recipes (or your mother’s).
You can choose to handwrite them yourself or print them out, depending on the theme and note you want to achieve. Get a binder, paper, envelopes, stickers, and anything creative that you think she will like, and draw illustrations to each page.
Or if you or she are not that into cooking, a scrapbook of memories is also a good option. Photographs, art, drawings from when you were a child and anything that will warm her heart is a good idea to put in the scrapbook.
It may sound like a cliché, but it’s an all-timer. Find the unique mug that you think your mom will adore or make your own design and have it printed. She will enjoy drinking coffee, or tea from it and it will be a nice reminder of you. People tend to get attached to mugs and can’t imagine drinking their morning coffee into another.
However, you can do a little more to get a smile on her face and that is to put something in the mug when giving it as a gift. If she likes drinking tea, you can put the teabags from her favorite tea. Or you can put chocolate and even bake a mini cake to fit the mug. Then wrap it in decorative paper and put a bow on it. Perfect.
